The American Crystallographic Association, Inc. is a non-profit, scientific organization of over 2,200 members. We are tax-exempt under 501 (c) (3) of the Internal Revenue Service code. The FEI is 22-6075182.
The American Crystallographic Association (ACA) was founded in 1949 through a merger of the American Society for X-Ray and Electron Diffraction (ASXRED) and the Crystallographic Society of America (CSA). The objective of the ACA is to promote interactions among scientists who study the structure of matter at atomic (or near atomic) resolution. These interactions will advance experimental and computational aspects of crystallography and diffraction. They will also promote the study of the arrangements of atoms and molecules in matter and the nature of the forces that both control and result from them
Membership in the ACA is open to any person who is actively interested in the purposes of the Association and whose application is approved by ACA Council or its designee, may become a member upon payment of annual dues. Student members are very welcome and their contributions to the life and vigor of the Association has always been important. The annual dues for students are $24, $39 for post docs, $39 for retired and $100 for regular members. The benefits of membership are the same in all categories of membership. These include: special registration rates at the Annual Meeting, voting privileges, RefleXions, the ACA Newsletter that is published 4 times per year, complimentary subscription to the Newsletter of the International Union of Crystallography, reduced prices of the current volume of the Transactions of the American Crystallographic Association, and for the International Tables for X-Ray Crystallography, Structure Reports, Journal of Applied Crystallography, and Acta Crystallographica when purchased for the member’s personal use only. Because the ACA is a member society of the American Institute of Physics (AIP) members also received Physics Today, a monthly publication of AIP.
The total membership of the ACA is over 2,200 with over 60 countries represented. National meetings are held annually, usually in July, except every third year when it is in May. There are 12 Special Interest Groups concerned with Biological Macromolecules, Fiber Diffraction, General Interest, Industrial, Materials Science, Neutron Scattering, Powder Diffraction, Service Crystallography, Small Angle Scattering, Small Molecules, Synchrotron Radiation and Young Scientists. ACA Members may join as many of these are interest them. Each Special Interest Group is responsible for organizing sessions at National Meetings at least every other year.
The headquarters of the association is located at the Hauptman Woodward Medical Research Institute, at 700 Ellicott St., Buffalo, NY 14203. Dr. William Duax is the Chief Executive Officer serving in a voluntary capacity. Marcia Colquhoun is the Director of Administrative Services in charge of day-to-day operations. The officers; president, vice president, Canadian rep, secretary and treasurer are elected representatives and each serve three year terms on the ACA Council. These officers, along with the Past President make up the voting membership of the Council. Ex-officio members of the Council are the Chief Executive Officer and the Chief Financial Officer.
The ACA communicates with members through the quarterly newsletter and this web site.
