POWDER DIFFRACTION SIG REPORT 2008
The Powder Diffraction SIG elected Ashfia Huq from Oak Ridge National Laboratory as Chair for 2009. Nominations for Chair-elect will be solicited at the SIG meeting in Knoxville. As in previous years, the SIG meeting will be held jointly with the Neutron and Materials SIGs, and attendance by representatives from the Synchrotron SIG will be strongly encouraged.
In planning for the 2008 ACA meeting, the Powder SIG supported the organization of a workshop on magnetic structure analysis, which is a commonly tackled problem in powder neutron diffraction experiments. The Powder SIG jointly sponsored five half day sessions:
13.02 Solid-State Transformations and Reactions (Materials, Service, Small Molecule)
13.05 Modern Teaching Tools for the 21st Century (Other)
13.12 Powder Challenges (Synchrotron)
13.13 Materials for Energy Applications (Materials, Neutron)
13.15 Diffuse Scattering and Local Structure (Materials)
The Powder SIG also joined forces with the Neutron and Synchrotron SIGs to propose a Transactions Symposium on “Complimentary Methods”. This topic was subsequently endorsed by the BioMac, General, and SAS SIGs, and everybody is looking forward to an exciting full day of talks on Complimentary Methods.
The Powder SIG has the pleasure to present Daniel Mitchell with the 2008 Student Etter Award for his work on the local structure of NaNbO3.
Ashfia Huq will represent the Powder SIG at the Friday planning meeting for the 2009 Annual Meeting.
