The 12th National School on Neutron and X-ray Scattering - June 12 - 26, 2010

Argonne National Laboratory and Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

The application deadline is March 8, 2010.

The main purpose of the National School on Neutron and X-ray Scattering is to educate graduate students on the utilization of major neutron and x-ray facilities. Lectures, presented by researchers from academia, industry, and national laboratories, will include basic tutorials on the principles of scattering theory and the characteristics of the sources, as well as seminars on the application of scattering methods to a variety of scientific subjects. Students will conduct short experiments at Argonne's Advanced Photon Source (APS) and Oak Ridge's Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) and High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) facilities to provide hands-on experience for using neutron and synchrotron sources.

Additional details about the School, along with electronic registration, are provided through the Argonne Division of Educational Programs website at www.dep.anl.gov/nx.

Fellowships Available - 16th Annual Train-of-Trainers Conference on Teaching Survival Skills and Ethics

June 21-26, 2010

Fellowships are available to support the attendance of individuals at the 16th Annual Conference on Teaching Survival Skills and Ethics to be held June 21-26, 2010, in Santa Fe, New Mexico. This trainer-of-trainers conference, which is funded by the National Institutes of Health, is designed to prepare faculty and administrators to establish or improve instruction in the responsible conduct of research and in professional development (e.g., writing research articles and grant applications; making oral presentations and teaching; funding employment; hiring, supervising, and mentoring).

The conference is relevant to individuals in research-oriented disciplines who teach at levels ranging from undergraduates through to faculty and professionals. It should be particularly useful to PIs and other individuals at institutions who are required by their funding agencies to provide instruction in RCR.

In addition to the training received during the conference, participants will receive an entire curriculum on RCR and professional development, including syllabi, PowerPoint slides, handouts for students, in-class exercises and cases for discussion, and an extensive bibliography. Copies of select books on ethics and program evaluation, as well as an extensive binder (400+pages) of journal articles and other readings also are provided.  This conference is co-directed by Michael Zigmond and Beth Fischer (University of Pittsburgh). Other members of the conference faculty include Jeanette Hoit, PhD, (University of Arizona), Jeffrey Kahn, PhD, (University of Minnesota), Richard McGee, PhD, (Northwestern University), Debra Parrish, JD, (Parrish Law Offices), Julio Ramirez, PhD, (Davidson College), Gonzalo Torres, PhD, (University of Pittsburgh), Alan West, Carmell Therapeutics Corporation, Joseph Whittaker, PhD, (Morgan State University), and Craig Wilcox, PhD, University of Pittsburgh.

Attendance is limited to 40 persons and applications are considered on a rolling basis. More information on the conference, including the application form, is available on our website www.survival.pitt.edu. Conference fellowships are available. They are awarded based on need and range in size up to a full fellowship, which covers all but $425 of the standard costs of attending this conference.
