ACA Logo Contest

The Structural Science Society Needs a Logo!

We are happy to report that we received a number of excellent submissions for the new logo. All the submissions followed the very general guidelines we described in our first request. However, after reviewing all the logo submissions, we realized that we need to provide some specific requirements.

For starters, we need to make sure the logo is inclusive of scientists determining atomic-scale structure, not just those practicing crystallography.

This group includes, but is certainly not limited to, scientists engaged in electron microscopy, PDF analysis, fiber diffraction, and small angle scattering. The goal is that the new logo should unify all structural science disciplines under the umbrella of the ACA. The new criteria we will use in selecting the new logo are:

  • The logo should be simple, contemporary and easy to recognize
  • If the logo has color, then both color and b/w versions should be submitted
  • The logo should be easy to reproduce when scanning, photocopying, printing on documents, swag, promotional items, etc.
  • Logo does not need to incorporate American Crystallographic Association, ACA or Structural Science Society, or SSS. society name (ACA) or the tag line

Submitted concepts need not be of professional quality; Council may commission a graphics artist to polish the logo design before release. Please submit your entries to [email protected] by April 15, 2021. Council will choose the new logo concept from those entries. As an incentive, we will be offering a $100 prize for the winning logo concept. The contest is open to any member in good standing.

The current logo was designed by Helen Berman about 35 years ago. Having seen the great graphics contributions made by members more recently, we want your help in designing this logo. Thus, we are holding a contest to find a logo concept.

The contest is open to any member in good standing and all entries must be submitted prior to 11:59 PM EST on April 15, 2021.
